Station History

1580am signed on in South Bend on December 22, 1947.

WJVA(AM) (Take 1)

1580am signed on as WJVA with 250 watts - Daytime only. Studios located at 214 W. Wayne St., South Bend, IN 46601 (Telephone: 3-8668). Owned by St. Joseph Valley Broadcasting Corp. Around 1950, WJVA moved to 206 S. Main St., Mishawaka, IN 46544 (Telephone: 5-8620). Booth American Co. purchased WJVA in August 1956. Studios later located on North Hickory Road (Telephone: 219.234.1111).

WAMJ(AM)

WJVA(AM) became WAMJ(AM) in the early 1980s. Studios located at 713 W. McKinley Ave., Mishawaka, IN 46545 (Telephone: 219.255.1110). WAMJ broadcast a talk and urban contemporary format. WAMJ(AM) briefly became WIWO(AM) in 1993.

WIWO(AM)

Studios located at 1129 N. Hickory Road, South Bend, IN 46615 (Telephone: 219.234.1580 and 219.287.8255). Owned by Times Communications, Inc. WIWO(AM) became WHLY(AM) in 1994.

WHLY(AM) (Take 1)

When Times Communications, Inc. sold 1620am (then-WJVA) to Artistic Media Partners in October 1999, for $250,000, Artistic Media Partners gained an LMA for WHLY. While Artistic Media Partners controlled both stations, the call letters WHLY and WJVA bounced back and forth between 1580am and 1620am. 1620am became WHLY and 1580am became WJVA in February 1999.

WJVA became WHLY on November 2, 2001.

WDND(AM)

WHLY moved back to 1620am in March 2004.

WHLY(AM) (Take 3)

Once the LMA with Artistic Media Partners expired on 17 May 2006, WHLY was again owned by Times Communications, Inc., which put a standards format on the air. In late September 2006, Times Communications, Inc. sold the station to St. Thomas More Foundation for $225,000. It changed format to Religious (Catholic) on Friday December 8, 2006. Studios formerly located at 3371 Cleveland Road, Suite 310, South Bend, IN 46628-9780. WHLY flipped formats to Regional Mexican on May 1, 2013.
